Persuasive Speaking I

In this introductory course, students will develop their ability to create and deliver strong speeches to captivate and move your audience. Each day will cover a main tenet of classical rhetoric: invention, arrangement, style, and delivery; which students will actively practice through written assignments, spoken exercises, and full speeches.

Essay Diagnostics

Learn to write a killer essay! This course covers many of the most common essay-writing pitfalls, such as focus, perspective, arrangement, tone, and source usage. Enter with an essay you’ve written and all your paper-writing questions, and leave with the skills of a scholarly author.

Persuasive Speaking II

Building on the skills from Persuasive Speaking I, this course dives into the ‘behind-the-scenes’ of being a powerful orator. Students will learn how to overflow with wise, beautiful, and fitting words and ideas; practice an ancient Greek memory technique; and discover how to find the crux of any argument. Students will actively practice these skills through a plethora of spoken exercises and speeches.

Lost Arts

Revitalize the skills your grandparents knew. In this course, students will practice home economics tasks such as basic clothes mending and minor first aid; outdoor skills such as map reading and using a compass; life-management skills such as making a to-do list, prioritizing tasks, and note-taking; and other lost arts like writing a thank-you note and finding words in a dictionary.

Soundcraft

This isn’t your standard music theory lecture. Dive into visualizing, hearing, and understanding pitch, rhythm, timbre, harmony, and form; how music conveys emotion; the Pythagorean science behind sound and harmonics; and the mathematical foundation of western music.
